Second Hand Treasures

Who knew a trip to a small, Kentish village's charity shop could be so fruitful. I don't mean this in the conventional way of finding designer gems, clothes which would typically be out of my price range. Rather, I mention it from an angle influenced by my love of ancient Greece.

I provide you with two examples of the Polykleitan-style Discophoros. Whilst the Montreal copy might be a little more dynamic, the Sydney copy, whilst being pretty static, likewise preserves the lightweight back foot position which was characteristic of Polykleitos' statue.

Two observations: it's completely fascinating that modern Olympic memorabilia chooses to reinforce ancient images and it was completely unexpected to discover these treasures in a charity shop.
