Lessons beyond the classroom

Being the only British exchange student at Ioannina University is an eye-opening experience. It has allowed me to immerse myself into its patchwork of cultures and in doing so, I've gained a renewed appreciation for the simplicity and support of the educational system back at home in the UK.

The Erasmus program brings together students from all over the globe: Poland, Germany, Belarus, Spain, Bulgaria, Italy, Cyprus, Turkey etc. Each student carries a unique story, filled with challenges and triumphs, but listening to these as an outsider is fascinating.

One friend, originally from Belarus but currently studying in Lithuania, faces significant obstacles just to stay connected with her loved ones. She studies in a language which is not her own and navigates financial restrictions imposed on her by her government. Another, originally from Nigeria, lives and studies in Poland, separated from his mother back home and siblings scattered across the world. A third, originally from Cyprus, but studying in Germany, soon to be apart from her boyfriend as he begins compulsory military service.

Compared to some, I feel incredibly fortunate. In England, I have the freedom to travel home easily, along with financial support. I am spared the struggles that those around me face daily.

Yet, despite our circumstances, there's a sense of unity among us. We share laughter and meals- but behind closed doors, each of us carries burdens that others many not understand. Living here is not just about studying but also about the resilience and stories of the people I will meet along the way.
